在1969年和1970年初，全球对环境问题的关注渐增，各界发起第一届世界地球日。芝加哥的循环再造纸卡制造商Container Corporation of America（CCA）赞助为高中生和大学生而设的设计比赛，旨在加强社会对环境保议的意识。最后由南加州大学的23岁学生Gary Anderson凭着这个循环再造标志胜出。
