图像素养又称图像识读能力，也有翻译为视觉素养一词，源自英文的Visual Literacy，指个人对视觉影像的理解及运用能力，特别是对艺术品、电视及电影，拥有分析及鉴赏的能力。如同文本素养有深浅的程度之分，一般基础的图像素养指人们能解读图画、图表、相片、照片、电视等视觉媒体所承载的信息的能力，以及欣赏绘画作品、摄影作品、电影的素养；较高一点的层次则是指能运用图画、摄影作品，甚至影片来表达自己的思想，以图像创作来传达消息的能力。

20世纪初期开始，视听媒体快速发展，成为承载信息、传播信息的重要管道，逐渐发展成为一种视觉语言。但许多学者专家指出，必须在中小学课程中即教导正确解读视觉信息的观念，以及有关图像素养的训练，使其具有批判性的识读技巧（Critical Viewing Skills）。

Visual literacy is the ability to interpret, negotiate, and make meaning from information presented in the form of an image, extending the meaning of literacy, which commonly signifies interpretation of a written or printed text. Visual literacy is based on the idea that pictures can be “read” and that meaning can be through a process of reading.
