Language experts say this is because the French wanted to have the r sound in the word, instead of the two l sounds.

And a good way to remember this is to think about the word legal, which has two 'l's.

And I'll  add that whenever I talk about this rule, I always hear from Americans who  tell me they prefer the 2-L version, so you're definitely not alone in feeling drawn  to those two L's.
