神经（Nerve）是由聚集成束的神经纤维所构成。而神经纤维本身是由多个神经元细胞构成，其神经元的构造为轴突外并被神经胶质细胞所形成的髓鞘包覆。如此神经能将消息从动物身体一处传递到另外一处，使动物能协调指挥动作与进行各种工作。

一旦神经细胞从另外一个细胞接收信号或刺激时，沿着神经细胞的轴突传递动作电位（即神经冲动）。神经元常聚集成束形成神经，内含细胞核和一长轴突，能传递电子信号的细胞。轴突是神经元中的线状部分，能发送神经冲动，其长度可达1公尺以上，神经冲动总是沿着轴突朝一个方向传递。树突与轴突相似，但长度短许多且有许多分支，神经元利用树突接收邻近由突触传来的信号。神经借由突触使神经元信号能传递给另一个神经元的接点，当神经冲动到达突触，微小膨大体会释放一种传递介质，激发相邻细胞产生冲动。脊椎动物的轴突常被其他细胞所包覆，这些像鞘的细胞含有髓磷脂帮助神经冲动传递。
