嚼肌是位于头部用于咬合和咀嚼的肌肉，沿着面部两侧各有一块嚼肌，从下颌或下颌骨沿伸到颧骨。每块嚼肌与固定在颞骨上的两块颞肌之一一起运作可将下巴往下拉。这些肌肉共同产生巨大的力量。当你咬东西时，颌两侧的肌肉拉力相等；当你咀嚼时，肌肉的拉力不相等，使颌左右移动。嚼肌下面有称为翼肌的小肌肉，可辅助咀嚼运动。

In human anatomy, the masseter is one of the muscles of mastication. In the animal kingdom, it is particularly powerful in herbivores to facilitate chewing of plant matter. The most obvious muscle of mastication is the masseter muscle, since it is the most superficial and one of the strongest.The massater muscle is also known as the 'thinker' because of how people sometimes rest their hand on it, when they are in deep concentration.
