相传在四千年前美索不达米亚已有开运河,但具体难以考证。信史上中国的胥河是现有记载的最早的运河,开凿于公元前506年。中国的京杭大运河是历史上最长的运河,长约1700公里,但今日只有少部份河段可供航运。目前世界上最长的运河是土库曼斯坦南部的卡拉库姆运河,全长约1375公里,大部份河段都可航行。

The main difference between them is that a navigation parallels a river and shares its drainage basin, while a canal cuts across a drainage divide. Canals deliver water where there is lack of water.
