舞妓（汉译另有「舞伎」，日语原文为「舞妓」）是日本艺妓在见习阶段时名称，和艺妓一样属于表演艺术的女性工作者，工作内容除为客人服侍餐饮外，主要为在宴席上以舞蹈、乐曲、乐器等表演助兴。

舞妓在东京等关东地区称为「半玉」、「雏妓」，在京都、大阪等关西地区则称为「舞妓（或写为「舞子」，皆读为まいこ，Maiko）」。

在日语中，“妓”字保留了传统汉语的用法，既可代表女性艺术表演者，亦可代表女性性工作者。而舞妓的“妓”是指前者，因为舞妓在原则上是艺术表演者，并不从事性交易。但在现代汉语中，多把“妓”字直觉关联到性交易方面，因此才有了“舞伎”这种以避讳为目的的现代汉语翻译写法。日语中的“伎”专指男性表演者（参见：歌舞伎），所以有人主张“舞妓”才是正确的中文翻译写法，以示区别。

Maiko(舞妓) is an apprentice geiko (not exactly same as geisha) in Kyoto, western Japan. Their jobs consist of performing songs, dances, and playing the shamisen or the koto (traditional Japanese instruments) for visitors during feasts. Maiko are usually aged 15 to 20 years old and become geiko after learning how to dance the traditional kyomai dances, play the shamisen, and learning Kyō-kotoba (dialect of Kyoto), regardless of their origins.
