军用载具通常都具备装甲以抵抗破片、子弹、飞弹或砲弹的袭击，保护载具内的人员不受敌火伤害。这类的载具包括坦克、飞行器，和船舰。

民用车辆也可以附上装甲。这些车辆包括记者、官员们的专车，或其他出入于冲突地带或某些犯罪高涨地区的车辆，以及总统的黑头车。装甲车也是保全公司的常规配备，用于运钞、运载贵重品，并减少货物半途拦截或抢劫的风险。

除了蓄意攻击之外，车辆上的装甲也可以避免一些非人为的威胁。有些太空船会装备特制的装甲，以抵抗小型陨石或太空垃圾的碎片撞击。甚至一般的民用飞机也会携带装甲，会以类似破片护罩的形式建构在这些燃气涡轮引擎的内壁，以避免压缩机／涡轮解体时可能造成的伤亡或机体损坏。

Military vehicles are commonly armoured (or armored) to withstand the impact of shrapnel, bullets, missiles, or shells, protecting the personnel inside from enemy fire. Such vehicles include Armoured fighting vehicles like tanks, aircraft and ships.

Civilian vehicles may also be armoured. These vehicles include cars used by reporters, officials and others in conflict zones or where violent crime is common, and presidential limousines. Armoured cars are also routinely used by security firms to carry money or valuables to reduce the risk of highway robbery or the hijacking of the cargo.
