抗糖尿病药用于降低血中的葡萄糖浓度来治疗糖尿病。除了胰岛素、艾塞那肽、利拉鲁肽和普兰林肽外，其他的都是经由经由口服，所以又称为口服降血糖药或口服抗高血糖药。选择抗糖尿病药是基于糖尿病的种类、年龄、个人情况及其他原因。

目前有几种的药物对于2型糖尿病有疗效，大多是口服给药，且常以并用的方式给予。对于2型糖尿病的合并疗法中可能包含胰岛素，但并非必要，所以通常只有在口服药物完全治疗失败之后，才会考虑给予。不过现在还在寻找胰岛素跟口服药物合并治疗的可能性。对于2型糖尿病患而言，注射胰岛素的优点是一个教育良好的病患，在他使用简单的剂量器测量血糖后可以调整剂量，甚至是增加剂量。
