波的信号速度是指一脉冲波行经介质的速度。其定义通常是根据脉冲呈最高强度半值的位置。 以电磁辐射如光而言，信号速度通常等同于群速度，在此情形下，相速度 vp 可以超过真空中的光速 c，但信号速度 vs 永远会比 c 小或等于 c。例外发生在介质出现吸收共振现象的附近频率（absorption resonance），vg>c。 光在一般介质中传输时，vp<c，vg>c，但信号速度依然不高于 c。
