《历代志》是《希伯来圣经》，即犹太教《塔纳赫》和基督教《旧约圣经》中的一部分。

原文在《希伯来圣经》中是一本书，后来《旧约圣经》被翻译成希腊文的时候才分为两部分。关于本书的作者是谁，到今天还没有肯定的结论。犹太法典认为历代志是出自以斯拉的手笔，这大概是因为历代志的最后一段（《历代志下》第36章第22节至第23节_参）跟以斯拉记的开头几乎完全一样之故。

不过有些学者对这现象有不同的解释：历代志的最后一段是后人加插上去的，为的是要把它和以斯拉记连接起来。无论如何，书中虽有提到波斯王古列下诏批准犹太人返故土后的短暂重建圣殿一事，全书却没有记载波斯帝国和希腊时代的历史，显然是写在犹太人被掳归回故土后的短暂时期之内，而编写人很可能是以斯拉。

The two Books of Chronicles (Hebrew:דברי הימים‎ Diḇrê Hayyāmîm, "The Matters of the Days"; Greek: Παραλειπομένων, Paraleipoménōn) are the final books of the Hebrew Bible in the order followed by modern Judaism; in that generally followed in Christianity, they follow the two Books of Kings and precede Ezra–Nehemiah, thus concluding the history-oriented books of the Old Testament. In the Christian Bible, the books are commonly referred to as 1 Chronicles and 2 Chronicles, or First Chronicles and Second Chronicles.
