瓶鼻鲸（学名Hyperoodon）一般而言指的是喙鲸科瓶鼻鲸属的两种喙鲸，也就是北瓶鼻鲸与南瓶鼻鲸。 事实上瓶鼻鲸这个俗名有时会包含第三种喙鲸，也就是喙鲸科中体型最大的贝氏喙鲸（或称贝尔氏喙鲸），其俗名之一就叫巨瓶鼻鲸。以下的叙述皆指瓶鼻鲸属的两种喙鲸。 瓶鼻鲸的属名由来其实是个谬误。定名者Lacépède在1804年发表这个属名时，采用了一位科学家Baussard在1789年一份学术报告中的说法，认为瓶鼻鲸上颚的表面具有许多微小的牙齿，Hyperoodon的意思就是“颚上具小齿”，而另一位学者Illiger在1811年提出另一个属名Uranodon，也有相同的涵意。事实上所谓的“小牙齿”只是上颚表面的一些骨质微小折皱，不过Hyperoodon这个名字就这么沿用下来。1846年，英国动物学家约翰·爱德华·格雷(John Edward Gray)在比对头骨标本后，曾提出本属的第三个物种H. latifrons，更提议将其独立为一新属Lagenocetus，此争议最后由David Gray在1883年提出证据，确定上述新种实为北瓶鼻鲸而获得解决。
