普世圣公宗（英语：Anglican Communion）的诞生是英国和爱尔兰的圣公会在世界各地传教的成果，所以这教会也可以称为圣公会（英语：Anglican Church）。从历史的角度来说，普世圣公宗的发展有两个阶段。

圣公宗是世界大家庭，共有八千多万教友，分布在38个成员教会。而38个成员教会共有160个国家和地区的圣公会教友；他们说不同语言，来自不同种族和文化。

而在很多书藉上都认为圣公会是新教的分支，主要是因为同为宗教改革的产物。

普世圣公宗不像天主教会，并无上级对下级的神圣管理的教宗主义（papalism，贬义词）和天主教会圣统制，而是「各成员教会之间共融（communion）成一个教会」，所以所有圣公宗内的教会都在教会制度「均一（uniformity）」的前提下自治，地位无上下之分，英格兰教会也不充当总会的角色，因此体现出「自治共融」（Autonomy-in-Communion）原则。
