动物收容所，是专门收留走失或被遗弃动物的场所。由于收容的动物多数是猫狗，故又名狗房。大部分动物收容所只会暂留动物7至14天，期间会为动物提供生活基本的需要，包括食水、医疗和容身之所。如果等待不及饲主领回，或未能得到新主人前来领养，这些动物多数会被人道毁灭，只有少数国家立法禁止杀掉流浪犬只。**导演九把刀于2013年就曾以动物收容所为提材，拍下《十二夜》这电影，讲述流浪狗在无人认养的情况下，度过牠们生命最后十二天的故事。

An animal shelter or pound is a place where stray, lost, abandoned or surrendered animals, mostly dogs and cats, and sometimes sick or wounded wildlife are brought. While no-kill shelters exist, it is sometimes policy to euthanize sick animals, and any animal that is not claimed quickly enough by a previous or new owner. In Europe, of 30 countries included in a survey, all but three (Germany, Greece, and Italy) permitted the killing of healthy stray dogs. Critics believe the new term "animal shelter" is generally a euphemism for the older term "pound". The word "pound" had its origins in the animal pounds of agricultural communities, where stray livestock would be penned or impounded until claimed by their owners. Some shelters even have sick tropical animals.
