文档文件格式（Document file format）是一种使用在保存媒体保存文档的文本或二进制文件格式，尤其为电脑所用。现存大量不兼容的文档文件格式。

一些人和制定标准的组织已确立出粗略共识，把XML作为未来文档文件格式的基础。开放XML-based标准（由XML构成的开放格式的标准）包括DocBook，较近代的包括ISO/IEC标准OpenDocument（ISO 26300:2006）、Office Open XML（ISO 29500:2008）。

1993年，ITU-T尝试确立一个用于一众文档文件格式的标准，即是人们所知的开放文档架构（英文：Open Document Architecture，缩写ODA），提议取代所有相竞争的文档文件格式。它记述在ITU-T文档T.411至T.421，相等于ISO 8513。这没有成功。

A rough consensus has been established that XML is to be the technical basis for future document file formats, although PDF is likely to remain the format of choice for fixed-layout documents.
