失能调整生命年（DALY）是衡量整体疾病负担的一种方法。最初是由世界卫生组织所开发，现在则渐渐地在公共卫生和健康影响评估等方面变得普遍。失能调整生命年「扩展了因过早死亡而损失的潜在寿命这一概念…将因为健康状况不佳或失能而损失的『健康』年岁也包括进去。」这么做，即可以将死亡率和发病率合并成单一的、共同的度量。 传统上，健康负债是以寿命损失年（YLL）（的期望值或平均数）来表示。此一量测并没有将失能的影响考虑进去，而这可以以健康生命损失年（YLD）来表示。失能调整生命年即是上述两个部份的加总。公式如下：
