After a reign of more than 20 years, Diocletian renounced his imperial title and retired, a sick man, to his palace in Dalmatia.

Everybody knew that the Roman Empire was having the life squeezed out of it, but nobody dared mention it for fear of Diocletian's spies.

This was the Emperor Diocletian. He came to power in 284 and set about trying to rebuild the empire, which was by now in ruins.

Diocletian's mausoleum dominated the center of the palace complex. Much of the original Roman building survives - the impressive dome, columns and capitals, and fine carved reliefs.

The remains of these baths can still be seen  today, though they were later dwarfed by the 3rd century baths of Caracalla and the  early 4th century baths of Diocletian.
