《十二使徒遗训》可能成书于公元1世纪末或2世纪初。作者不详。共十六章，分为三部分。这份文献是最早期的教会章则，也是《使徒宪章》第七卷的基础。

第一部分（1.1-6.2）称为「生死两道」（Document of the Two Ways）。论生之道，是要爱上帝爱邻舍，要离开恶行，善尽基督徒本分。死之道是不从真理、邪恶、虚假和放纵，行此道者必受咒诅。

第二部分（6.3-10.7）是在礼仪方面的指导。包含洗礼、禁食、祈祷、圣餐；对待先知、执事、主教的教导。其中有论到洗礼正常是用浸水礼，缺水时则可奉圣父圣子圣灵的名三次浇水在头上。
