发展心理学,是心理学的分支之一。主要是研究人类随着年龄的增长时在发展过程的心理转变。这当中包括了儿童的心理与成人的差异、儿童的心理发展过程,以及当儿童有心理障碍时应当如何处理。

过去的学者把儿童心理学等同于发展心理学,原因是当时人类的平均寿命都不超过50岁,很多人在30-40岁期间因为战乱或疾病而离世。根据约翰·桑托洛克(Santrock, 2004)的理论,在当时的心理学家的角度来看,一般人的心理发展在成年以后就不再改变。所以,当时的发展心理学只着重儿童的心理发展。不过,随着人类的平均寿命增长,以及社会变得复杂化,心理学家开始发现人类在成年以后,心理状况亦会继续发展。所以,有关成年人及老年人心理发展的研究开始如雨后春笋的发表。之后,不少人开始以整全的角度来观看人生的心理发展,成为了今日的毕生发展心理学。

Originally concerned with infants and children, the field has expanded to include adolescence, adult development, aging, and the entire lifespan. This field examines change across a broad range of topics including: motor skills, cognitive development, executive functions, moral understanding, language acquisition, social change, personality, emotional development, self-concept and identity formation.
