D型肝炎是一种病毒性肝炎，别称:Delta virus，必须借着B肝病毒才能转变为可感染人类或动物的病毒。

丁型肝炎的病原体是一种拟病毒HDV，它只有一个拧结的核糖核酸环，实际上是一个缺陷的RNA病毒。它没有自己的外壳，而是借用乙型肝炎病毒的外壳，它可以与乙型肝炎病毒的外壳蛋白质HBsAg结合，因此它的传播途径与乙型肝炎病毒相同。丁型肝炎病毒无法独立存在，它只能与乙型肝炎病毒同时传染，或者只能感染已经患乙型肝炎病毒的病人。丁型肝炎也能转为慢性。

Hepatitis D (hepatitis delta) is a disease caused by the hepatitis D virus (HDV), a small spherical enveloped RNA virus. This is one of five known hepatitis viruses: A, B, C, D, and E. HDV is considered to be a subviral satellite because it can propagate only in the presence of the hepatitis B virus (HBV). Transmission of HDV can occur either via simultaneous infection with HBV (coinfection) or superimposed on chronic hepatitis B or hepatitis B carrier state (superinfection).
