大名日语: 大名だいみょう  )是日本封建时代对一个较大地域领主的称呼,由名主一词转变而来。

日本创建统一的国家武力以前,土地或庄园的领主为了保护自家产业,大多拥有自己的武力,以武士为骨干。所谓「名主」,就是在东日本土地或庄园的领主,西日本则称为庄屋,九州则称为肝煎——武力较强、领地较大达到十数村,甚至管辖一整个令制国的领主就是大名主(或大庄屋、大肝煎),简称「大名」,有些势力范围广达数个令制国的大名,又被称做大大名;否则即为小名;全部大小领主可以合称为大小名。日本各时代对「大名」的资格定义不尽相同,不过同样都是指一个较大地域的领主。

The daimyo(大名daimyō,  pronunciation ) were the powerful feudal lords in pre-modern Japan who ruled most of the country from their vast, hereditary land holdings. In the term, "dai"() literally means "large", and "myō" stands for myōden(名田), meaning private land.
