杀手是指接受他人的请托而杀害特定对象，并获得物质性报酬（通常是金钱）的人。以此为业的专业级杀手称为「职业杀手」。

与刺客不同的是，刺客通常是指从事政治性暗杀的杀手，且不一定有雇主。在大多数具有司法体系的国家中，杀手都是绝对的犯罪工作，而聘雇杀手的委托人也触犯了「教唆杀人罪」。此外，这类型的杀人合约是不具有法律效力的，也就是说如果委托人与杀手的任一方片面违约，另一方也不能循法律途径提告与求偿。广义地说，死刑运行者（俗称「刽子手」）也算是杀手的一种，但由于其行动背后受法律规范，故不构成犯罪。

杀手必须在不受人情义理影响的情况下进行杀人，因此对于委托人的动机等方面不可以有深入的了解，必须以「商业交易」的观点角度来进行。

Contract killing is a form of murder in which one party hires another party to kill a target individual or group of people. It involves an illegal agreement between two or more parties in which one party agrees to kill the target in exchange for some form of payment, monetary or otherwise. Either party may be a person, group, or an organization. Contract killing has been associated with organized crime and with vendettas. In the United States, the gang Murder, Inc. committed hundreds of murders on behalf of the National Crime Syndicate.
