小脑（cerebellum，指「较小的脑」）是位于后颅窝的脑组织。小脑在感觉感知、协调性，和运动控制中扮演重要角色；它也和注意、语言等很多认知功能相关，亦能调控恐惧和欢乐等反应，其中最为人们确知的是其运动相关功能。小脑不会主动发起动作，但会接收来自脊髓感觉系统和其他脑区的信号，影响运动协调、精确度和准确的时机控制。小脑通过丘脑等通路与大脑皮层相连，从而起到支配运动协调性的作用；下小脑接受来自脊髓小脑径以及下橄榄核等结构的输入，集成多方面的信息，来微调运动的准确性，协调性和连贯性。正由于小脑的功能是“微调”运动技能，所以小脑的损伤不会带来诸如瘫痪的严重症状，但是会导致精细动作技能、平衡能力、姿势和动作学习方面的症状。18世纪的科学研究表明，小脑受损的病人表现出运动协调性障碍；19世纪的小脑研究则主要基于动物损伤实验。这类实验发现，动物的小脑受损以后，表现出动作异常、步态笨拙，以及肌肉无力。这些观察最终使学者得出结论：小脑的主要功能是运动控制。不过，现代生物医学研究表明，除了运动以外，小脑还有许多其他功能，例如认知功能，注意力和语言处理，音乐处理，在时机控制方面也有重要作用。

The cerebellum (Latin for "little brain") is a region of the brain that plays an important role in motor control. It may also be involved in some cognitive functions such as attention and language, and in regulating fear and pleasure responses, but its movement-related functions are the most solidly established. The cerebellum does not initiate movement, but it contributes to coordination, precision, and accurate timing. It receives input from sensory systems of the spinal cord and from other parts of the brain, and integrates these inputs to fine-tune motor activity. Cerebellar damage produces disorders in fine movement, equilibrium, posture, and motor learning.
