荨麻科根据不同的分类法共有54至79属，大约2600种，基本都是草本，偶尔有灌木种，广泛分布在除极地外的世界各地，最大的属是冷水花属，有500至600种，此外如楼梯草属有300种，荨麻属有80种。
本科植物没有乳汁，茎皮有较长的纤维，表皮细胞有钙质钟乳体，所以在叶上和枝干上有点状或长形浅色斑纹，单叶，常两侧不对称。花细小，多单性，聚成二级头状或假穗状花序。果实为坚果或核果。

Urticaceae /ɜːrtᵻˈkeɪsiː/, the nettle family, is a family of flowering plants. The family name comes from the genus Urtica. Urticaceae includes a number of well-known and useful plants, including the nettles, ramie (Boehmeria nivea), māmaki (Pipturus albidus), and ajlai (Debregeasia saeneb).
