Boehmeria macrophylla Hornem. is a perennial herb native to Asia. It belongs to the family Urticaceae. The flowers are dioecious or monoecious. Its flowering season is from June to September. It is commonly found in forests, thickets, along streams and road sides. The species as a whole is characterized by the opposite leaves, spike like inflorescence, and fruiting perianth with a rounded base. The varieties are very distinctive and their status needs more detailed assessment.
Uses
The fibre of the stem is of excellent quality, it is shiny, white and strong and is used for making sacks, bags, rough clothes, nets, rope etc. It is possibly useful for textiles. Wood is moderately hard but too small for much use, it makes a good fuel.
Boehmeria macrophylla has also a few medicinal uses. It is used as a tonic, for treating boils and dermatitis. B. macrophylla is also used as an insecticide.
