百时美施贵宝公司在1989年由美国两大制药厂百时美（Bristol-Myers）和施贵宝（Squibb）合并而成的。前者在1887年由威廉·麦拉仑·必治妥和约翰·里普雷·美尔斯在纽约州奥奈达县柯林顿村成立的，而两位创办人都是当地汉弥尔顿学院的毕业生。

百时美施贵宝公司致力于新药的研究和开发，医药方面包括癌症治疗、心脏血管、传染病和新陈代谢类综合症等领域，具有一定领导地位。旗下的全资附属公司美赞臣（Mead Johnson）和康复宝（ConvaTec），分别致力于营养和保健/康复产品之研究和开发。
