江户是日本东京之旧称，特别是指江户时代的东京，以江户城（今皇居）为城市的中心。当时统治日本的德川氏以江户城做为居所，并将幕府设置于此，使江户成为当时日本实质的政治中心。江户幕府与江户时代便是得名于此。

江户的市区分为两大部分，分别为江户城西侧的「山之手」与东侧的「下町」。做为江户幕府的直辖地，江户同时是德川氏（德川将军家）的城下町，别称「武阳」（ぶよう）。江户幕府的将军大多居住于江户城，但日本的政治中心在幕末时代转移到京都，而末代将军德川庆喜就任后完全没在江户城居住过。进入明治时代后，江户被更名为东京，并取代京都成为日本首都至今。

Edo(江戸, "bay-entrance" or "estuary"), also romanized as Yedo or Yeddo, is the former name of Tokyo. It was the seat of power for the Tokugawa shogunate, which ruled Japan from 1603 to 1868. During this period, it grew to become one of the largest cities in the world and home to an urban culture centered on the notion of a "floating world".
