木管乐器大多数由坚实耐用的木材制作（新式木管乐器也有用金属材料和有机材料，甚至用上玻璃制作的，比如长笛）。木管乐器的历史很久远，大致上古代人类在动物的腿骨上打洞制造出来的原始笛子就是木管乐器的祖先。现代木管乐器是从各国民间音乐中使用的类似芦笛、笛和箫之类的乐器发展而来。

木管乐器大致有两种外形，一种是圆柱型，比如长笛和单簧管。另一种是圆锥型，比如双簧管和大管。从发音原理来讲，木管乐器分三类：

木管乐器在管身上开有音孔，通过堵住和放开特定的音孔改变管身的有效长度来产生不同的音高。

木管乐器在17世纪被正式接受为管弦乐队中的标准配置。意大利和法国的歌剧作家陆续在自己的作品中使用了木管乐器。木管乐器的表现力丰富，演奏技巧复杂。

Woodwind instruments are a family of musical instruments within the more general category of wind instruments. There are two main types of woodwind instruments: flutes and reed instruments (otherwise called reed pipes). What differentiates these instruments from other wind instruments is the way in which they produce their sound. Examples are a saxophone, a basson, piccolo and others.
