猎巫是原指搜捕女巫与巫师或施行巫术的证据将被指控的人带上宗教审判法庭。今日此类事件被视为一种道德恐慌。从12世纪开始，到16世纪是最高峰的时期。当时基督教（包括天主教、东正教等）已经传入欧洲将近一千年，并且几乎成为欧洲的唯一宗教。源自于对于未知的恐惧和对巫术的害怕导致猎杀女巫，而法兰西女英雄圣女贞德也曾被诬为女巫。在高峰的时代，猎巫审判是于世俗法院审判。

其实初时男巫和女巫被指控的人数一样多，直到了1487年海因里希·克雷默及约翰·斯普伦格著作的猎巫手册《女巫之槌》面世后，令整个欧洲社会把猎巫的矛头指向女性。书中宣称「巫术是来自肉体的色欲，这在女人身上是永难满足的，魔鬼知道女人喜爱肉体乐趣，于是以性的愉悦诱使她们效忠」。所以在不少有关女巫指控的法庭文献当中，都有跟魔鬼性交的罪名。被判死刑的女巫，财产会被没收，令政界和司法界对猎巫运动更加积极。在迫害的巅峰期，很多不懂巫术的女人也遭人诬告罪成而被活活烧死。而且在巅峰期的16世纪，猎巫审判大多是由世俗法庭而非宗教法院审判。
