物质状态是指一种物质出现不同的相。早期来说，物质状态是以它的体积性质来分辨。在固态时，物质拥有固定的形状和容量；而在液态时，物质维持固定的容量但形状会随容器的形状而改变；气态时，物质不论有没有容量都会膨涨以进行扩散。近期，科学家以分子之间的相互关系作分类。固态是指因分子之间因为相互的吸力因而只会在固定位置震动。而在液体的时候，分子之间距离仍然比较近，分子之间仍有一定的吸引力，因此只能在有限的范围中活动。至于在气态，分子之间的距离较远，因此分子之间的吸引力并不显著，所以分子可以随意活动。电浆态（Plasma），是在高温之下出现的高度离化气体。而由于相互之间的吸力是离子力，因而出现与气体不同的性质，所以电浆态被认为是第四种物质状态。假如有一种物质状态不是由分子组成而是由不同力所组成，我们会考虑成一种新的物质状态。例如：费米凝聚和夸克-胶子浆。

In physics, a state of matter is one of the distinct forms that matter takes on. Four states of matter are observable in everyday life: solid, liquid, gas, and plasma. Many other states are known to exist only in extreme situations, such as Bose–Einstein condensates, neutron-degenerate matter and quark-gluon plasma, which occur in situations of extreme cold, extreme density and extremely high-energy color-charged matter respectively.
