Mahavira (Mahāvīra), also known as Vardhamāna, was the twenty-fourth and last Jain Tirthankara (Teaching God). Mahavira is often mistakenly called the founder of Jainism, though this is not the case since the 23rd Tirthankara Parshvanatha who was his immediate predecessor is a historical figure.
