参宿四（Betelgeuse），也就是拜耳命名法中著名的猎户座α（α Orionis或α Ori），是全天第九亮星，也是猎户座第二亮星，只比邻近的参宿七（猎户座β）暗淡一点。它是有着明显红色的半规则变星，视星等在0.2至1.2等之间变化着，是变光幅度最大的一等星。这颗恒星标示着冬季大三角的顶点和冬季六边形的中心。

在分类上参宿四是一颗红超巨星，并且是已知最大和最亮的恒星之一。如果它位于太阳系的中心，它的表面会超越小行星带，并可能抵达并超越木星的轨道，完全地席卷掉水星、金星、地球和火星。但是，在上个世纪对参宿四的距离估计从180光年至1,300光年不等，因此对其直径、光度和质量的估计是很难被证实的。目前认为参宿四的距离大约是640光年，平均的绝对星等是-6.05。

Betelgeuse, also known by its Bayer designation Alpha Orionis (shortened to α Orionis or α Ori), is the ninth-brightest star in the night sky and second-brightest in the constellation of Orion. Distinctly reddish, it is a semiregular variable star whose apparent magnitude varies between 0.0 and 1.3, the widest range of any first-magnitude star. Betelgeuse is one of three stars that make up the Winter Triangle, and it marks the center of the Winter Hexagon. The star's name is derived from the Arabic إبط الجوزاء Ibt al-Jauzā' or يد الجوزاء Yad al-Jauzā', meaning "the hand of Orion".
