Fifty years ago, most paleontologists thought that fossil footprints, which we also call trace fossils, were rare and unimportant.

So trace fossils are all given unique names of their own.

This is why trace fossils are so important to paleontologists today.

These are collectively called trace fossils, or more formally, ichnofossils.

Trace fossils are literally the fossilized traces of animal activities.

Due to variables like when they lived and where, an industrial civilization that lasted 100,000 years, that's over three hundred times longer than us they might leave no fossil trace at all.

Paleontologists can sometimes use these fossilized bones to indirectly study soft tissues using what are known as trace fossils: things like skin patterns left in the mud.

Trace fossils, also called ichnofossils (sg. /ˈɪknfɒsl/; Greek:ιχνος ikhnos "trace, track"), are geological records of biological activity. Trace fossils may consist of impressions made on the substrate by an organism: for example, burrows, borings (bioerosion), urolites (erosion caused by evacuation of liquid wastes), footprints and feeding marks, and root cavities. The term in its broadest sense also includes the remains of other organic material produced by an organism — for example coprolites (fossilized droppings) or chemical markers — or sedimentological structures produced by biological means - for example, stromatolites. Trace fossils contrast with body fossils, which are the fossilized remains of parts of organisms' bodies, usually altered by later chemical activity or mineralization.
