租借在国际关系上可指一国有条件或无条件的将其领土的一部分，有期限的借与他国使用，而仍保有该领土的主权，租借土地的国家通常是透过武力取得租借的机会，并且基于租借国也经常是战胜国的原因，租借法案经常是一种不平等条约，而租借的领土则称为租借地。

由于十九世纪中国因清政府缺乏管理能力，经常将通商口岸附近的土地签约给其他国家，其中有因为外国不满而被迫者、亦有因为官员嫌管理外国人很麻烦而主动者，造成租借盛行的现象。特别注意，租借、租借地、租界具有三个不完全相同的意义，不应该混用。

A leasehold estate is an ownership of a temporary right to hold land or property in which a lessee or a tenant holds rights of real property by some form of title from a lessor or landlord. Although a tenant does hold rights to real property, a leasehold estate is typically considered personal property.
