第一支商用合成润滑油始于1934年，由德国法本公司化学家Dr. Hermann Zorn通过石蜡加氢异构（hydrocracked）制成了一种高黏度指数加氢异构油（HVI）用于润滑当时使用高性能活塞发动机的战斗机和一些自动机枪。后在1943年，纳粹德国陆军的虎王坦克配备了采用（聚a-烯烃）的润滑油，这是目前大多数人认可的全合成润滑油。与此差不多的时候，美国亦研发出来以酯类为主的全合成型润滑油。
