美国薄荷属，又名马薄荷属，是唇形科的一个属，大约有16种，原产于北美洲。直立性一年生或多年生草本植物，植株高度约0.2至0.9公尺。叶披针形，叶片基部靠近叶柄的地方较宽大，叶片尖端则较狭小，叶对生，叶片光滑或有毛，叶缘为轻微的锯齿状，叶长约7至14公分。本属植物的叶子内含有芳香油，将叶子揉碎时，会散发出香味，其中以美国薄荷所含有的芳香油浓度最高。

属名Monarda是纪念十六世纪的西班牙医生与植物学家尼古拉斯·蒙纳德斯（Nicolas Monardes）对植物学的贡献而命名的。

Monarda is a genus of flowering plants in the mint family, Lamiaceae. The genus is endemic to North America. Common names include bee balm, horsemint, oswego tea, and ber****t, the latter inspired by the fragrance of the leaves, which is reminiscent of ber****t orange (Citrus bergamia). The genus was named for the Spanish botanist Nicolás Monardes, who wrote a book in 1574 describing plants of the New World.
