次巨星是恒星在光谱分类中的一种，比一般的主序星（矮星）明亮，但又没有达到真正的巨星亮度，她们被认为是核心的氢融合将要终止或已经终止的恒星。质量大约是一个太阳质量的恒星，因核心收缩的缘故，会造成核心温度的升高，当温度高到足以让包覆在核心外围的氢壳层进行核反应时，将使这颗恒星胀大到成为一颗真正的巨星。而在开始次巨星的阶段时（像是南河三A），恒星的直径和亮度都有所增加，但是恒星的温度会下降或是颜色会产生明显的变化，然后次巨星会变得更为接近真实的巨星，比在主序带上有着相似质量的恒星更大与更明亮。在次巨星的阶段，整体的光度变化不大，要在球状星团的赫罗图中才能突显出这个特征。在恒星的约克光谱分类中，她们的光度是IV。
