勾陈一（α UMi / 小熊座α）是小熊座内最亮的恒星。它非常靠近天球北极（在2006年相距仅42′），是地球现在的北极星。

勾陈一是三合星的系统，主星（勾陈一A）是一颗大的黄色造父变星，有一颗明亮的黄矮星（勾陈一B）在2400AU的距离上环绕着。勾陈一B早在1780就被威廉·赫歇尔看见，能够用现代的小望远镜观察到。在1929年，发现勾陈一A是一颗分光双星，有一颗非常靠近的矮伴星（称为小熊座Pα、小熊座aα、或小熊座Abα）。在2006年1月，从NASA公布的哈伯太空望远镜图片中可以同时看见勾陈一三合星中的这三颗星。最靠近的矮星距离勾陈一A只有18.5AU ，大约是太阳至天王星的距离，这也足以解释为何会掩盖在勾陈一A的光芒下了。

Polaris (α Ursae Minoris, α UMi, commonly the North Star or Pole Star) is the brightest star in the constellation Ursa Minor. It is very close to the north celestial pole, making it the current northern pole star. The revised Hipparcos parallax gives a distance to Polaris of about 433 light-years (133 parsecs) while calculations by other methods derive distances around 30% closer.
