标准尺是天文学上近似大小已知的天体，经由测量它们在天空中的视角直径，可以测量出它们与地球的距离。

一个直径已知的物体距离越远看起来就越小，角直径的大小与距离成反比。因此一个物体的距离可以由已知的实际直径和测量到的角度大小估计出来。

螺旋星系的角直径，在实务上可以很容易的经由观测测量得到，而这类星系的大小大约已知，并且没有很大的差异性。因此，可以利用角直径和一般的大小，估计出它们的距离。角直径和真实大小的关系式如下：
