The Angkor era. The giant carved face on  the Bayon temple at the Angkor Thom complex in northwest Cambodia symbolizes the Buddha and  King Jayavarman VII, who ruled from 1130 to 1219.

The Temple of Bayon with its many serene and smiling stone faces, the Ta Prohm, where nature and architecture intertwined in a timeless embrace, and the Terrace of the Elephants, which spoke of grandeur and power.

Jayavarman VII (r. 1180-1220) rebuilt the outer  walls, placing his temple mountain (the Bayon) at the redesigned city center. While the  legitimacy as king remains in question, once established as a leader, he  brought about great social changes.
