志留系一名源于威尔士地区一个古老部族Silures。1835年，英国R.I.莫企逊，在威尔士地区创建了广义的志留系，对岩系作了划分，用笔石与壳相化石进行对比。1879年，C.拉普沃思把莫企逊广义的志留系下层命名为奥陶系。中文名源自旧时日本人使用日语汉字音读的音译名“志留纪”（音读：シルキ，罗马字：siruki）。

The Silurian is a geologic period and system that extends from the end of the Ordovician Period, at 443.8 million years ago (Mya), to the beginning of the Devonian Period, 419.2 Mya. As with other geologic periods, the rock beds that define the period's start and end are well identified, but the exact dates are uncertain by several million years. The base of the Silurian is set at a major extinction event when 60% of marine species were wiped out. See Ordovician-Silurian extinction events.
