The counties of Iran, also called shahrestan (Persian:شهرستان‎‎ shahrestān), are administrative divisions of larger provinces (ostan). The word shahrestan comes from the Persian words shahr ("city, town") and stān ("province, state"). "County", therefore, is a near equivalent of shahrestan.
