硒半胱胺酸是一种胺基酸，存在于少数一些酶中，如谷胱甘肽过氧化酶、甲状腺素5'-脱碘酶、硫氧还蛋白还原酶、甲酸脱氢酶、甘胺酸还原酶和一些氢化酶等。硒半胱胺酸的结构和半胱胺酸类似，只是其中的硫原子被硒取代。包含硒半胱胺酸残基的蛋白都称为硒蛋白。

在遗传密码中，硒半胱胺酸的编码是UGA（即乳白密码子，opal stop codon），通常用作终止密码子。但如果在mRNA中有一个硒半胱胺酸插入串行(SElenoCysteine Insertion Sequence, SECIS)，UGA就用作硒半胱胺酸的编码。SECIS串行是由特定的核苷酸串行和碱基配对形成的二级结构决定的。在真细菌中，SECIS直接跟在UGA密码子之后，和UGA在同一个阅读框里。而在古细菌和真核生物中，SECIS在mRNA的3'-不翻译区域(3'-UTR)中，可以引导多个UGA密码子编码硒半胱胺酸残基。当细胞生长缺乏硒时，硒蛋白的翻译会在UGA密码子处中止，成为不完整而没有功能的蛋白。

Selenocysteine exists naturally in three domains of life, but not in every lineage, as a building block of selenoproteins. Selenocysteine is a cysteine analogue with a selenium-containing selenol group in place of the sulfur-containing thiol group.
