筛管分布于被子植物,成熟后的筛分子会损失掉大部分细胞器，只能由旁边的伴胞提供营养。筛分子和伴胞来源于同一筛母细胞。筛管分子顶端相互连接，胞壁之间穿孔，形成筛板。联络索通过筛板孔上下贯穿，以调节运输。伴胞通过原生质丝与筛管分子联系，保持筛管分子的形态与渗透压，并为之提供营养和能量。

筛胞则存在于蕨类和裸子植物的韧皮部。筛胞和筛管分子结构相似，但并无筛板。筛胞由蛋白质细胞(protein cell)（在松树的针叶横切面可见），又名斯特拉斯堡细胞，提供营养。但蛋白质细胞和筛胞并不来自同一母细胞。

In vascular plants, phloem is the living tissue that carries organic nutrients (known as photosynthate), in particular, sucrose, a sugar, to all parts of the plant where needed. In trees, the phloem is the innermost layer of the bark, hence the name, derived from the Greek word φλοιός (phloios) meaning "bark". The phloem is concerned mainly with the transport of soluble organic material made during photosynthesis. This process of transportation is called translocation.
