椭斑马鲛为辐鳍鱼纲鲈形目鲭亚目鲭科的其中一种，分布于西大西洋区，从加拿大至墨西哥犹加敦半岛海域，栖息深度10-35公尺，本鱼腹鳍间的突起小而两裂，侧线逐渐地对于尾柄弯曲下来，泳鳔不存在，身体覆盖着小鳞片，第一背鳍黑色前面地在后部地而在末梢部的边缘，通常银色的有被有显著的对椭圆的深色斑点的大约三个列的圆的侧边，背鳍硬棘17-19枚;背鳍软条17-20枚;臀鳍软条17-20枚;脊椎骨51-53个，体长可达91公分，栖息在沿岸海域，属肉食性，以鱼类、头足类为食，可做为食用鱼、游钓鱼，曾有雪卡鱼中毒的报告。
