卫星导航系统是覆盖全球的自主地利空间定位的卫星系统，允许小巧的电子接收器确定它的所在位置 (经度、纬度和高度)，并且经由卫星广播沿着视线方向发送的时间信号精确到10米的范围内。接收机计算的精确时间以及位置，可以作为科学实验的参考。

截至2012年，只有美国的全球定位系统 (GPS；共由24颗卫星组成) 及前苏联的格洛纳斯系统 (GLONASS) 是完全覆盖全球的定位系统。中国的北斗卫星导航系统 (BDS) 则于2012年12月开始服务于亚太区 (共由16颗卫星组成)，预计于约2020年覆盖全球。欧洲联盟的伽利略定位系统则为在初期部署阶段的全球导航卫星系统，预定最早到2020年才能够充分的运作。一些国家，包括法国、日本和印度，都在发展区域导航系统。

A satellite navigation or satnav system is a system of satellites that provide autonomous geo-spatial positioning with global coverage. It allows small electronic receivers to determine their location (longitude, latitude, and altitude/elevation) to high precision (within a few metres) using time signals transmitted along a line of sight by radio from satellites. The signals also allow the electronic receiver to calculate the current local time to high precision, which allows time synchronisation. A satellite navigation system with global coverage may be termed a global navigation satellite system (GNSS). The system can be used for navigation or for tracking the position of something fitted with a receiver (satellite tracking).
