铁路始创以来，放沙设备主要给大轮出的蒸气机车主轴使用。由于动力分布式的电车和柴油车，主轴的输出并没有那么大，设有这装备的例子少，但并非完全有，香港的路面电车和九广轻铁电车，设有这个设备。喷沙设备，最简单的是，把干燥了的沙放入设置于高处的贮沙箱，利用喉管，将沙放掉到驱动车轮附近的轨道上。印度等地，拿了沙箱子的人(沙男)登上机车的最前端，必要时按情况用手播放沙。
