咆哮40度的风在称为高速帆船航路（Clipper Route）的航路上占有重要的角色。据说是1610年时荷兰的航海家亨德利克（Hendrik Brouwer）发现的，利用这边的风，可以在印度洋高速往东前进到巴达维亚（荷属东印度公司）。
