红州与蓝州是指美国近年来选举得票数分布的倾向。红州较支持共和党，蓝州则较支持民主党。

一般说来，在西部沿海、东北部沿海和五大湖畔州份都会区的选民投票倾向较支持民主党，故有蓝州之说，而南部和中部则较倾向于投给共和党，故有红州之说。

值得一提的是，红州与蓝州一词通常在美国总统和美国国会等全国级选举较适用，州长等地方选举则不太适用于这规律，故常有蓝州选出共和党州长和市长的情形（例如加州州长阿诺·史瓦辛格和纽约市长鲁迪·朱利安尼与米高·彭博），反之亦然。

此说法起源于2000年美国总统选举，之前则没有统一的政党颜色简称。有趣的是，多数民主国家习惯以红色代表自由主义或社会主义左派政党（如英国工党），以蓝色代表的保守主义右派政党（如英国保守党），但在美国则相反。

This terminology came into use in the United States presidential election of 2000 on an episode of the Today show on October 30, 2000. According to The Washington Post, the terms were coined by journalist Tim Russert, during his televised coverage of the 2000 presidential election.
