Rear admiral is a commissioned naval officer rank in the United States Navy, the United States Coast Guard, the United States Public Health Service Commissioned Corps, and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration Commissioned Officer Corps. The rank of rear admiral is above that of a captain, and below that of a vice admiral. The uniformed services of the United States are unique in having two grades of rear admirals, namely a rear admiral (lower half) (a one-star rank) and rear admiral (upper half) (a two-star rank).
